Description:
The W52 is a unit that is produced by Allen-Bradley. It is a single-pole heater element from the W series with the maximum current rating of 10.3 amperes. This device provides the best protection for overcurrent in large electric motors. The W52 heater element is normally used in applications where thermal overload relays, magnetic motor starters & motor controllers for overcurrent protection. The heater element is rated as Class 20 protection.

Part number W52, from the W series family, is a heater element for an overload relay, which was manufactured by Allen-Bradley. Unlike circuit breakers and fuses, the purpose of the unit is not to provide overcurrent protection for power conductors, but to provide protection to large electric motors against overcurrent. Its amperage rating is from 9.9 amperes to 10.3 amperes, and it consists of a single pole. Additionally, its use cases or applications that are most suitable consist of thermal overload relays, magnetic motor starters & motor controls.
The W52 provides protection by sensing the current going to the motor. Each of the W series units and in this case, a W52 unit, uses small heaters made of bi-metallic elements when heated up by the current to the motor gets bent. When the current is too high for an extended period of time, the heaters open the relay contacts carrying current to the coil of the contactor. Selecting a W series requires finding the correct correction factor ratio (C.F.R.) which is the ratio between the correction factor of the motor ambient temperature (C.F.M.) and the correction factor for the controller ambient temperature (C.F.C.). In the case of the W52 heater element, the rating Class 20 protection means that the W52 overload relay will trip in 20 seconds or less at a current equal to 600 percent of its rating (which is 10.3 amperes). The normal operating temperature for the heating element is +40 degrees Celsius It is important to note that the overload heaters can go bad if they get tripped often.
