The W46 is a product of Allen Bradley / Rockwell Automation. This device is a thermal overload heater element belonging to the series W product line. It is normally used with the thermal overload relays made of Eutectic alloy and whose main function is to offer protection to the main circuit. They are electromechanical devices that protect the motors by cutting off power, especially during phase failure or during overloads. That is when motor draws up excessive current over a prolonged period of time. The heater element has a maximum full load current of 5.82 amperes for size 00...0, whereas for size 1, the maximum full load current is indicated as 5.68 amperes. This heater element is a trip Class 20 device, which implies that when the thermal current rating is 6 times the maximum rating (600 percent more), then the time taken for the heater element to trip will be 20 seconds or less.

The controller ambient temperature is considered to be 40 degrees Celsius, or the equivalent temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Similarly, the ambient temperature for the motor is also 40 degrees Celsius, or the equivalent of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The cables used with the heater element are of type W, meaning that they are designed to be used in systems that perform heavy duties, such as power supply cables.
