The Allen-Bradley 1746-OW16 is the output module. It has sixteen (16) output channels separated in two (2) groups of eight (8) relays in each one. This design allow us to use mixed AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) voltages on same module, one group for each voltage type. Maximum continuous carrent ratings for twenty-four (24) volt DC is two (2) amperes and for 230 volts AC, one (1) ampere.

The Allen-Bradley 1746-OW16 digital module is a sophisticated logic controller module that provides the output control interface between the SLC processor and the field devices used in the industrial automation system. The module is equipped with 16 independent output channels and can control the functions of multiple components within the control system in a productive and efficient manner. The module functions as an electronic interface between the logic controller and the system components and transmits control signals to individual components to add a degree of control to the automation system. The potential static within the object can be discharged by touching the module to the ground. This ensures that the modules are used in a static-safe workstation that avoids internal damage to the module and guarantees normal operation and high productivity.

The Allen-Bradley 1746-OW16 digital output control module is primarily installed in a NEMA rated standard enclosure and has a noise immunity in accordance with the NEMA Standard ICS 2-230. The noise immunity characteristics of the device can be improved by installing as far away as possible from high voltage power sources within the enclosure. At a rated voltage of 24 volts of direct current, the module draws a current measuring up to 0.18 milliamperes from the backplane. The isolation voltage of the module is measured at 1500V. To obtain optimum utilization from the module, it is recommended to supply and input voltage with values ranging from 5 volts to 265 volts of alternating current. The total heat dissipation of the digital module is 5.7 watts.

The Allen-Bradley 1746-OW16 is the output module and a member of SLC500 family of modules, and it is inserted into the rack with other modules and SLC500 processor. It is a relay output module and it has sixteen (16) channels separated in two (2) groups of eight (8) relays in each group. That design allows connections and switching AC and DC voltages at same module, taking care about current ratings. The relays itself requires protection from arching, so there Is a need for surge suppression devices that must be installed externally on each channel. Although the surge suppression devices are very useful, very often the cheap external relays with bigger current ratings are installed between 1746-OW16 and load, in order to avoid surge suppressors and to switch high currents and heavy duty loads. For this device and relays at 120 volt AC (alternating currrent), make/break currents are 15/1.5 amperes, and for 240 volts AC make/break currents are 7.5/0.75 amperes. For twenty-four (24) volt DC voltage the continuous current is maximum 2 amperes. There is a limit for maximum continuous current per module, that it must not exceed sixteen (16) amperes. The signal delay in ON/OFF state switching is ten (10) milliseconds and the module must work in the areas without chemicals and gases. The operating temperature should be kept between thirty-two and one hundred and forty (32 and 140) degrees Fahrenheit.
