The Allen-Bradley 1746-NO4I is a part of the SLC 500 4-Channel Analog I/O Modules series and is primarily used in control systems as an interface to ensure status monitoring and regulatory control. The module generally functions in conjunction with Allen-Bradley’s Serial Logic Controllers 500 series and can be used to control a wide array of variables in different environments. In contrast with other modules from the same series, the 1746-NO4I can use an external input power supply of 24 volts of direct current. This eliminates the need to power the module using the backplane and provides a great deal of configuration flexibility if the power supply loading of the serial logic controller is critical. A switch is provided to allow the operator to choose the power supply mode. In the UP position, the external power supply is used as an input power supply. In the DOWN position, backplane current is used to operate the analog module.

The Allen-Bradley 1746-NO4I is a sophisticated analog device and is preferably mounted and installed on a 1746 Chassis. The device can operate in a variety of environmental conditions, with operating temperature ranging from 0° Celsius to 60° Celsius. The placement of the module in the 1746 Chassis is dependent on factors such as electrical noise and ambient temperature. The slot for the module should ideally be placed away from an alternating current or high voltage direct current module to improve the noise immunity characteristics of the analog module. Ideally, the module can be installed at the bottom of the enclosure in close proximity to the SLC 500 system. It can also be installed in modular systems.
