The Allen-Bradley 1746-IA16 is a sophisticated digital module and forms an integral part of the SLC 500 Digital I/O Module series produced by Rockwell Automation. The logic controller module consists of 16 input channels that control and transmit the input signals required by the processor to drive the control system. The module can be mounted and installed on a NEMA Type 12/13 chassis to ensure the smooth functioning of the processor. Adequate clearances must be provided on the enclosure to allow for ventilation and sufficient airflow. The module is immune to electrical noise in accordance with the NEMA Standard ICS 2-230 and must be placed away from a high-voltage alternating current or direct current power source to reduce the effects of electrical noise on the performance characteristics of the digital module.

The Allen-Bradley 1746-IA16 digital module can be used in a wide array of industrial environments. The module can operate in an environment with an operating temperature that ranges from 0° Celsius to 60° Celsius. It can be stored at sub-zero temperatures as low as -40° Celsius. Wire ties can be used during the installation of the module to hold the routed wires within the enclosure and improve the accessibility and ease of maintenance of the control module. An installed module can be removed from the enclosure by holding the module release buttons on each self-locking tab of the digital module. This allows the module to slide out of the chassis slot without causing damage to the hardware of the digital module and its surrounding components.
