The 2706-D21J8 is a DL5 series Message Display equipped with a two-line, sixteen-character VFD, a 12-24V DC input power supply, and an eight-kilobyte RAM memory. The DL5 is available with two different display options: a single-line display (16 characters) or a two-line display (32 characters) (16 characters per line). Serial or parallel triggering; DC input; round-robin mode; priority mode; numeric mode; binary or BCD input mode; and debug mode are the primary characteristics of the DL5 Series. This series may be programmed through a number of devices and displays a range of characters and symbols featuring uppercase letters and punctuation. The DL40 supports a broad number of characters and symbols, including capital and lowercase letters, punctuation, and extended ASCII special characters.

Allen-Bradley's 2706-D21J8 data liner message display is a two-line data liner message display from the DL5 series. It has a two-line display with 16 alphanumerics (uppercase only) characters per line, as well as an 8 kilobytes electrical erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) capable of storing up to 387 message blocks. It has 14-segment vacuum fluorescent character kinds and a viewing distance of about 3 meters (10 feet). The 2706-D21J8 has two different ports: a parallel port and a serial port. These ports cannot be used concurrently and may be chosen for activation through a specified DIP switch. The 2706-D21J8 is powered by a DC power source ranging from 12 to 24 volts.

The 2706-D21J8 has a maximum power rating of 3W and an input current of 250mA at a steady-state 12 volt DC voltage input. It has a 5% ripple in the input voltage and a 5% noise in the highest peak-to-peak input voltage range. It operates at 300mA (250mA operational) and 300mA (125mA inrush current at 12 volts DC and 300mA (125mA) at 24 volts DC. The 2706-D21J8 data liner message display's parallel port has 16 input data lines and a single parallel port selector. The parallel port of the 2706-D21J8 operates between 5 and 24 volts DC. The DL10 data liner message displays are available with a single line, two lines, or four lines of text. These devices are intended for panel installation in industrial situations and need an 110/120V AC power supply. The DL10 may be used in either slave or terminal mode. Serial communication with the host may be accomplished by RS-232 (single device) or RS-422 (multi-drop). It operates between 0 and 50 degrees Celsius (32 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit), with a maximum non-condensing relative humidity of 5 to 95%. It measures 79.3 x 159 x 109 millimeters and weighs 1.3 kg.
