The Allen-Bradley 1746-BAS is a basic module that contains two (2) serial ports for RS-422, RS-232, and RS-485 communication protocols and a single DH-485 port to communicate with I/O devices. These ports offer a communication distance of 1230 meters (4035 feet). This module provides a battery backup RAM of 24 kilobytes and nonvolatile EEPROM memory modules of either 8 kilobytes or 32 kilobytes. The first serial port labeled “PRT1” is employed for RS-485, RS-232/RS-423, and RS-422 communication with I/O devices and the full-duplex mode by offering different data transfer rates from 300 bits per second to 19200 bits per second. The second port labeled “PRT2” is employed to interface external modules through the DFI protocol. The 1746-BAS includes also a DH-485 port to connect to a DH-485 network with either a half or full-duplex mode.
The 1746-BAS draws a backplane current of 150 milliamperes at 5 Volts DC and 40 milliamperes at 24 Volts DC. This module has eight (8) LED indicators to show the module and communication status and to help the troubleshooting process when issues occur. The 1746-BAS employs the backplane optical isolation provided by optocouplers to offer electrical isolation of 1500 Volts AC between the control logic and I/O points. This device is a single slot module that can be mounted on an SLC 500 chassis slot and provides the NEMA standard for noise immunity. The module can be employed with SLC 500 systems. This device operates at a temperature range of zero (0) to 60 degrees Celsius (32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit) and weighs approximately 340 grams (0.75 pounds) while shipping.
