Logic Modules Selection Guide
Logic Module is the main component of the PanelView Plus terminals. These terminals are Human Machine Interface (HMI) devices that offer add-on functionality over Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for monitoring and controlling automation processes. The terminals are made in modular configuration to provide flexibility. The PanelView Plus terminals consist of a display module and a logic module with an optional communication module to add functionality. The display module features color displays, keypads, and touch input. The logic module is attached directly behind the display module and offers various hardware capabilities. This guide provides an in-depth analysis of different models of logic modules compatible with PanelView Plus 700 up to PanelView Plus 1500 terminals.
There are two types of PanelView Plus terminals: standard and CE, and correspondingly standard and CE logic modules exist. The standard logic modules are a series of logic modules offered for PanelView Plus terminals, whereas CE logic modules are made for the CE version of PanelView Plus terminals. The standard and CE versions of PanelView Plus terminals can be differentiated based on the preloaded software inside the CompactFlash present in the terminal. The CE logic modules are considered high-performance logic modules as they provide additional ability to connect to desktop computers which can support more complex applications. The internal CompactFlash can be ordered with the logic module or separately based on the size and software requirements. The Internal CompactFlash and CompactFlash cards are also covered in this guide, and they are an inherent part of the logic modules and their selection for any application.
General Specifications of Logic Modules
Different models of logic modules offer different specifications. An overview of common technical specifications of logic modules is provided below.
- Logic modules support either AC or DC power sources for operation. The AC voltage ranges from 85 to 264V, and the DC voltage ranges from 18 to 32V. DC voltage can be isolated or non-isolated based on the logic module model.
- Two types of communication ports are present in any logic module: RS-232 and Ethernet. RS-232 is a serial communication port that is used for controller communication, file sharing, and printing. The Ethernet port is used for faster controller communication and supports 10 and 100 Mbps transmission rates.
- Logic modules also offer a network interface connector, which allows for the connection of an additional communication module. It can be useful in communication-intensive applications.
- There are two USB 2.0 (type A) ports available on the logic module. These ports have a hot-swapping function and support peripheral devices, such as a mouse, keyboard, and printer.
- A secure digital (SD) card slot is also provided to perform functions including firmware upgradation, file transfer, and data logging. The cards from the 1784 series are supported and feature a hot swap function.
- The terminal can be reset easily by using an onboard ‘reset switch’. It does not matter if the terminal is in on-state or off-state.
- Likewise, a ‘default switch’ allows access to maintenance operations in the terminal. Functions like restoring to factory settings can be easily performed.
- LED indicators are present on the panel, which represent communication and fault statuses.
- A real-time clock is also available to keep track of time in the on and off state of the terminal. This clock has its own power source.
- Some models of logic modules are offered with board protection from environmental factors. Modules with two types of coatings are available, named ‘Conformal-coated’ and ‘Marine-certified’.

CE Logic Modules for PanelView Plus CE Terminals
The CE terminals and CE modules offer a connection to a desktop, enabling them for complex applications. There are various CE logic modules available which can be selected based on application requirements. The important fact about CE modules is that they are more resistant to environmental conditions. The CE logic modules can operate in widely varying temperature values, such as 0 to 60°C. They also feature a flexible storage temperature of range -40°C to +85°C.
Before moving on to the CE logic modules and their specifications, let’s see what features are specifically offered due to the incorporation of an OS. Many general and server-based features are available in CE logic modules, including:
- FTP server: It is named file transfer protocol, a standard protocol for file sharing on TCP/IP-based networks.
- Web Server: It utilizes HTTP protocol and provides content viewing through web pages.
- File Server: This server feature enables shared access to files and peripheral devices to other computers on the same network.
